The Chef is responsible for preparation, cooking and presentation of food to Booth University College students, employees, guests, and catering customers in ways that enhance customer satisfaction and for ensuring this is done in accordance with hygiene, safety and food handling standards and regulations and within budget guidelines.

(Note: this is a regular full-time position but may be subject to short periods of layoff if Bistro is closed during some weeks of the Academic year.)

SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS: Does not have full supervisory responsibilities but has a lead hand type of function assigning tasks and providing daily direction to kitchen staff including cooks, kitchen assistants, cashiers, casual event staff.

Essential Functions of the Job:

• Oversee the effective operation of the kitchen, instructing staff and coordinating work responsibilities of cooks and other kitchen staff
• Maintain excellent standards in hygiene, safety, and all aspects of food handling
• Ensure all equipment is cleaned, used, and maintained properly and that all storage and work areas are kept clean and orderly
• Ensure all staff are aware of dietary restrictions declared by students, employees, guests, and catering customers
• Order food supplies and manage inventory, directing the storage and rotation of incoming supplies
• Control waste with good stock storage, rotation, temperature control and menu planning
• Prepare menus for Booth Bistro and for special functions, pricing menus to meet budget including the research and preparation of menus to meet special dietary restrictions; reflect various cultures; and support special student/Booth community events
• Provide effective leadership in kitchen, communicating effectively with kitchen staff to ensure issues that occur during service are handled promptly and in positive manner and refer matters to Hospitality Manager as appropriate
• Strive for highest level of customer satisfaction; ensure kitchen is operating in ways that are consistent with the mission and identity of Booth University College
• Participate in meetings and training as required

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Required
• Satisfactory criminal record check
• Fully supportive of the integration of faith and learning in a Christian university-level setting and a commitment to the Mission of Booth University College
• Ability to integrate your Christian faith within the workplace
• 3 years of experience in a kitchen management or chef role including responsibilities for budgeting
• Strong customer service orientation
• Careful attention to detail particularly in regard to all aspects of safety
• Demonstrated creativity in menu planning
• Demonstrated leadership skills; able to take initiative and creatively solve problems
• Ability to use knowledge of effective body mechanics to handle bulk items and to tolerate standing, walking, bending, and lifting for extended periods

2. Assets (Preferred Qualifications)
• Red Seal certification preferred
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel as well as basic knowledge of POS (Point of Sales) systems

This is a full -time position with 37.5 hours per week.
